About

Sidekick's Bluetooth injection module ensures that doctors stay connected with patients' experiences during long-term self-medication, enabling informed decision-making that enhances patient satisfaction and longevity.

This project began through a significant collaboration with a major pharmaceutical company and will be accessible to thousands of private and public clinicians in Iceland, the United States, Britain and elsewhere.

Flick recently pivoted their business model to capture the huge opportunities in AI content creation for social media, one of the most common pieces of content small business owners and social media marketers rely on are graphics. Graphics are imagery with text overlayed, usually telling you about something.

Challenge

As an emerging start-up on the cusp of a $55M Series B funding round, Sidekick was undergoing significant changes to its teams and processes. The Bluetooth injection module, a pivotal project, needed revitalisation to reach completion and be delivered to clinicians.

Collaborating closely with engineers, researchers, and the product team, I spearheaded efforts to rejuvenate the project and implemented design system changes I'd previously led. This effort was aimed at ensuring a safe and seamless experience for patients at a delicate time in their treatment.

Outcomes

Outcomes

Outcomes

  • On-time delivery: A project at risk of being delivered late was instead delivered at the agreed time with improved usability and a better representation of Sidekick's long-term business goals

  • Patient safety: Usability improvements tested positively and variations passed region specific regulatory compliance

  • Medication adherence increase: Clinicians have reported positive signals that patients using the Bluetooth injection module adhere to their medication for longer, are more consistent in their injection timing and more frequently rotate their site of injection reducing risks of complications

Existing research included previously completed competitor analysis, and various research into bluetooth medical devices which contained suggestions for best practices when designing an accompanying interface.

To centre the team around finalising the project, and increasing the likelihood of robust decision making I took the team on a heuristic exercise in which we ranked importance of information, spotted potential gaps in compliance, and tried to account for as many errors and edge cases as possible.

Key takeaways:

  1. Some info was more critical to patient success than other info and should be highlighted.

  2. We found lots of potential errors we hadn’t accounted for.

  3. Various pieces of copy caused confusion.

  4. We didn't account for patients who logged meds frequently.

  5. We had no way for a user to manage their device, which is replaced semi-frequently.

After some planning time with the discovery team I conducted 14 customer interviews in which I asked exploratory questions, and watched them work through their content creation process, to learn what difficulties they faced in producing high-quality and consistent visual content.

Due to our tight timescale we had to balance partner reviews with testing towards the end of the sprint. We felt the subject matter required high-fidelity prototypes to reduce unnecessary concerns on the side of the partner, and avoid frustration on the part of the testers.

To achieve this we gave consideration to which flows were critical to positively affecting patient success and retention, and utilised what we could from the mid-fidelity designs.

Tests were conducted remotely by myself, and in-person with a faux device by internal user researchers.

I’m very limited in what I can share due to NDA’s, but a lot of the feedback centred around both english copy and translated copy, that would be a challenge we’d overcome in the next few days amongst a few other small tweaks.

Accounting for translation

Responding to user feedback and tying up loose ends, some of my primary contributions at this stage were:

  1. Collaborating closely with our translation team to account for areas where translation could detract from readability.

  2. Providing annotations for areas of the design which had the least time spent on them due to time constraints.

  3. Tying up other loose ends from usability testing.

  4. Translating designs to components in our new design system ‘genome’.

Lesson

Having not worked with translation to this extent before, my learnings are quite simple. In the future I would stress test designs with common, character heavy translations, and research best practices.

The choose medication screen is one of many places across the app that will feature additional education in the form of ‘Why? snippets’. Understanding the why when a patient does something makes them more likely to do it, promoting adherence.

Injectable medication usually needs some time to warm up outside of the fridge to reduce discomfort, so we built a countdown timer and notify users when their medication is ready.

Errors experienced during the injection flow can not only be frustrating but scary and traumatic, so copy should be matter-of-fact and have actionable suggestions to make the next step clear to the patient.
