Flick recently pivoted their business model to capture the huge opportunities in AI content creation for social media, one of the most common pieces of content small business owners and social media marketers rely on are graphics. Graphics are imagery with text overlayed, usually telling you about something.

Solomonic was at a pivotal point for their business, after building an operational platform full of rich data and insights they had secured contracts with a number of small to medium sized law firms, but the platform itself was built rapidly and as a result its UX and UI design suffered.
Before injecting new funding and approaching larger clients, the founders needed a designer to lead a full research backed redesign over 12 weeks that improved user satisfaction and increased the number of insights and reports firms would pay to access.

As I joined Solomonic was also going through a redesign exercise which I was involved in. The primary goal was to deliver a snapshot of what’s to come to investors and the board, to start generating interest for their revitalised platforms.

Lesson
I would usually avoid getting stuck into high-fidelity design until we’d aligned on a number of usability patterns we were happy with. In this case board alignment was business critical, and I felt there was an opportunity to ensure new brand guidelines wouldn’t hamper UX decisions at a later date.

I ran a number of usability tests with existing customers, they were tasked with locating different claims using different methods of search and filtering to assess time to and likelihood of task completion, we also surveyed user sentiment.
Analysis uncovered complexities with search that we hadn’t considered, but the filter and sidebar navigation worked as expected.

I ran a principles workshop with the engineering team to promote a sense of ownership over the design system, we also aligned on naming conventions and systematic approach.
We used a simplified version of atomic to organise components, and relied on light annotation (time was thin) to support engineers in delivery after I moved onto my next role.

After some planning time with the discovery team I conducted 14 customer interviews in which I asked exploratory questions, and watched them work through their content creation process, to learn what difficulties they faced in producing high-quality and consistent visual content.

Prior to this Solomonic didn’t have a dedicated homepage. We kept the scope very simple to save time and prioritise more important initiatives. This iteration would give users easy access to the search tool, which following changes was the most straightforward way to find specific claims which is litigators primary reason for opening Solomonic’s platform.
